Aural Training Exercises: A Guide for Musicians

As a musician, developing your ability to recognize and identify pitches is crucial for improving your overall musicianship. The following exercises are designed to be sung in a comfortable octave, without transposing. Ideally, after practicing these exercises, you should be able to identify any pitch using the first pitch as a reference point. The main purpose of these solfège exercises is to develop your pitch-matching skills and a strong sense of tonal center.

To get started, work through the tracks below, using only the training and test tracks labeled 'root.' It's recommended that you practice with just the root position form of the chords until you can reliably recognize those before introducing the various inversions. The exercises are in a suggested order for gradually learning all the types of triads.

Each exercise includes the correct answer, allowing you to know if you got it right and giving you the chance to hear the chord again during the pause. You'll also have access to corresponding 'Test' tracks, which include a short pause after each chord, as well as 'Training' tracks that allow you to listen carefully to each type of chord and tune your ear to the different sounds.
